Dr. Wang Bingzhang is a physician and veteran democracy advocate who launched China Spring and helped establish the Chinese Alliance for Democracy. The Free China Movement’s archived 1998 founding release also names him in its elected founding governance cohort.
On June 27, 2002, Wang disappeared while traveling in Vietnam and later surfaced in Chinese custody. Amnesty International documented competing accounts; current U.S. congressional and Freedom House profiles describe his removal as an abduction.
On February 10, 2003, the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to life imprisonment after a closed trial on espionage and terrorism charges. His appeal was rejected. On May 9, 2003, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention adopted Opinion No. 10/2003, finding the detention arbitrary.
Current status. The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission currently lists Wang as imprisoned under a life sentence and states that he is held at Shaoguan Prison in Guangdong. No authoritative release or sentence-change record was located as of August 31, 2026.
Health. The latest detailed family-visit information on the congressional profile concerns a visit in May 2024; the exact day is not public. It reports very poor physical and mental health and the loss of several teeth, while also summarizing earlier strokes, surgery, phlebitis, and high blood pressure. These are attributed reports, not an independent medical assessment. No newer authoritative health report was located by August 31, 2026.
Free China Movement position. Wang Bingzhang should be released unconditionally. Pending release, he should receive independent medical assessment and care, regular family communication, and protection from prolonged isolation and other ill-treatment.
