Overseas Chinese Democracy, Human Rights & Freedom Awards Archive
This research archive records overseas awards created to recognize contributions to Chinese democracy, human rights, freedom, republicanism, and civic resistance. It distinguishes confirmed recipients from proposed nominees and preserves the awarding organization’s stated purpose and citation where available. Inclusion documents recognition; it does not imply Free China endorsement of every recipient’s political views.
Chinese Democratic Education Foundation — Outstanding Democracy Award
The Chinese Democratic Education Foundation (CDEF), founded in California in 1985, says its annual award recognizes individuals, organizations, or works making outstanding contributions to Chinese society’s progress, democracy, rule of law, freedom, and human rights. Public nominations are reviewed and recipients are selected by an expert/scholar committee.

Historical citation recovery completed: the current official CDEF archive provides year-specific pages for the historical sequence, with biographical/citation material for many recipients. These official year pages are now the citation layer for this archive. Where a page gives only biography/context rather than a formal written citation, Free China does not invent a rationale.
CDEF Special Contribution Award
CDEF says this award recognizes people who provided long-term and selfless support to the foundation. The official list currently includes founder Huang Yuchuan (Frank K. Wong); vice president Anthony Ma (Ma Liangjun), recorded as receiving the award on March 15, 2010 after about twenty years of democracy-education work; founding member Jerry Sung (Sun Luzheng), recorded as receiving it at the 15th Outstanding Democracy Award ceremony; Sun Guodong and He Bingzi; Cheng Qilin; Liu Kaishen; and sculptor Thomas Marsh. Where CDEF does not provide an exact award date on its summary page, this archive does not invent one.
Huang Hua Gang Spirit Award / 黄花岗精神奖
Huang Hua Gang created the award after publishing material concerning the “Hunan Three Heroes” and the detention of author Chen Shaowen. Its own account describes the “Huang Hua Gang spirit” through risking danger for democratic-republican ideals, perseverance despite repression or failure, and willingness to sacrifice for principle.
June 25, 2004 — First Huang Hua Gang Spirit Award: Wang Bingzhang. The ceremony was held at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in San Francisco. The magazine’s award account cited his long-term role in overseas Chinese democracy activism, persistence despite hardship and attacks, efforts to organize opposition activity, imprisonment and life sentence, and what the magazine viewed as his continuing democratic-republican commitment. Family members accepted the award on his behalf.
Important distinction: the Hunan Three Heroes and Chen Shaowen were publicly discussed as intended/proposed first recipients during the award’s formation. They are not listed here as formal winners unless a later actual award record is recovered.
Later-recipient search status: a deep search of the current Huang Hua Gang site, the Heidelberg-preserved early archive, exact award-title variants, ceremony/winner keyword combinations, and contemporaneous coverage found the 2004 Wang Bingzhang ceremony but no verifiable second or later formal recipient as of Aug. 31, 2026. This means “not located in the sources searched,” not that a later award can be proven never to have occurred.

Archive expansion
Additional diaspora-created democracy and human-rights award families will be added only after organizer records are verified. International prizes such as the Sakharov Prize or Nobel Peace Prize will be kept in a separate “International recognition” subsection so they are not confused with awards created by overseas Chinese civic or democracy organizations.
