Wu’er Kaixi was an important participant and organizer in the 1989 student movement and later became a long-term democracy advocate and commentator. A 2019 Congressional-Executive Commission on China hearing describes him as a “Tiananmen student leader,” political commentator and founder of Friends of Liu Xiaobo. Free China preserves that wording as the source’s characterization rather than using “student leader” as a permanent personal title.
Historical-role note: Specific organizational offices and their start/end dates will be stated when verified from primary or reliable contemporaneous evidence. Until that verification is complete, this profile uses the narrower description “participant/organizer.”
