Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch document his 2020 four-year sentence, allegations of torture or ill-treatment, release in 2022, re-arrest with his wife Xu Yan on April 13, 2023 while traveling to meet EU officials, and completion of a later three-year sentence on April 13, 2026, followed by continuing monitoring and restrictions.
