Zhang Jingsheng / 张京生

Born in 1952, from Changsha (长沙人), Zhang Jingsheng (张京生) was sentenced to 13 years in prison; HRIC lists him in the Chishan Penitentiary (Hunan No. 1 Prison) group.

Name form: “Zhang Jingsheng” is standardized here because 京生 is jīngshēng; “Zhang Jinsheng” is retained only as the HRIC/S1 romanization variant, which drops the medial “g.” The charge wording was not located. HRIC records a 13-year sentence.

Earlier and later history: a 2013 secondary compendium reports that Zhang had previously received a four-year sentence in 1981 for editing unofficial publications during the Democracy Wall period; it also describes his 1989 activity as participation in the Workers’ Autonomous Federation and public speeches, reports the 13-year sentence, says he was released in 2001, and places him in Changsha afterward. These biographical additions are PROBABLE, single-secondary-source reporting; publication-title details are attributed to Tang Baiqiao and are not treated as independently verified here.

Evidence status

The documentary record presently supports Zhang Jingsheng’s identity and sentence as stated above. The charge wording, the original court judgment (no case number located) and the prison-release record have not yet been found, No release chronology is documented; anything not documented is marked RESEARCH PENDING.

Current status: unknown (no release record located).
