Guo Hongwei (郭宏伟) was a Jilin whistleblower and democracy activist who died on April 9, 2021 after suffering a brain hemorrhage while imprisoned.
His family alleged that he endured mistreatment in prison and that severe hypertension was left untreated. Prison authorities notified the family on April 4 that he had suffered a brain hemorrhage; after surgery, he died five days later.
His family and human-rights groups called for an independent investigation, preservation of evidence and access to medical records. No independent autopsy or public investigation has established whether alleged mistreatment or medical neglect caused his death.
