Wang Meiyu (王美余) was a Hunan activist who died in custody on September 23, 2019, after roughly two and a half months in detention.
Police told his family that he had died at a military hospital. Chinese Human Rights Defenders reported that officials gave no precise cause and pressed the family to accept an account that his death followed an acute illness. His wife reportedly observed facial injuries and blood around his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Those observations are attributed to the family and are not independent medical findings.
No public autopsy, medical record or independent investigation has established how Wang died.
