Li Hong (力虹) / Zhang Jianhong (张建红)

Li Hong (力虹) / Zhang Jianhong (张建红) was a Ningbo writer and democracy activist. Zhang Jianhong (1958–2010) wrote under the pen name Li Hong and edited the literary website Aegean Sea (爱琴海).

Imprisonment and illness

Zhang was arrested in September 2006 and sentenced in March 2007 to six years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power” over articles published online. Press-freedom organizations reported that he developed a serious progressive neuromuscular illness in prison and that requests for medical parole were repeatedly denied.

Medical parole and death

He was released on medical parole in June 2010 after his condition had deteriorated severely and died in a Ningbo hospital on December 31, 2010. Sources differ in the clinical terminology used for his illness, so this profile does not assert a single diagnosis beyond the documented progressive neuromuscular condition.

He died while on medical parole, not inside a prison. Press-freedom organizations criticized the delay in access to medical care; those assessments are attributed to the organizations that made them and are not presented as independent forensic findings.

Identity note

Li Hong (力虹) / Zhang Jianhong (张建红) is a different person from Li Hongkuan (李洪宽).
