Li Hong (力虹) / Zhang Jianhong (张建红): Writer Who Died on Medical Parole

Li Hong (力虹) / Zhang Jianhong (张建红) was a Ningbo writer and democracy activist who died in hospital on December 31, 2010 while on medical parole from a six-year prison sentence.

Press-freedom organizations reported that Zhang developed a progressive neuromuscular illness in prison and that medical-parole requests were repeatedly denied before his release in June 2010, when his condition had become severe.

This memorial does not characterize his death as occurring inside a prison. Sources use different clinical labels for his illness, and no independent autopsy is publicly documented. Assessments that delayed treatment contributed to his decline are attributed to the organizations making those assessments.
