Bao Zunxin — Media Profile & Archive

Bao Zunxin (包遵信, 1937–2007) was a Chinese historian and public intellectual whose writings and public interventions form part of the documentary record of the 1989 democracy movement.

Selected writings

  • Toward the Future (走向未来丛书) — Bao co-created the influential book series with Jin Guantao and others in 1984. It introduced mainland Chinese readers to a broad range of social-science and natural-science ideas.
  • The Inside Story of June Fourth: The Unfinished Nirvana (《六四的内情:未完成的涅磐》) — published in Taipei in 1997, an account of 1989 by Bao as a historian and participant in the intellectual life surrounding the movement.

1989 public record

Reference accounts document Bao’s public support for the Tiananmen pro-democracy protesters and his participation in petitions during spring 1989. One petition he signed described China as still being ruled by an “emperor,” understood as a reference to Deng Xiaoping. Exact dates and venues for Bao’s public speeches have not been established in the sources reviewed here.

Project research also identifies Bao as a probable signatory of the February 1989 open letter by intellectuals calling for the release of political prisoners. Because the original signatory roster has not yet been retrieved, this point remains attributed rather than treated here as independently verified.

Custody and later work

After the June 4 crackdown, Bao was arrested and sentenced to five years for “counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement.” Standard biographical references report that he was released in November 1992 after serving about three and a half years.

Images and interviews
