Chen Ziming / 陈子明
Chen Ziming was an independent researcher, publisher and civic activist associated with reform-era intellectual networks and the Beijing Social and Economic Sciences Research Institute.
After the 1989 crackdown he was arrested. A reproduced Beijing Intermediate People’s Court judgment records a combined thirteen-year prison term imposed in 1991, with four years’ subsequent deprivation of political rights, for conspiring to subvert the government and counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement. Amnesty International later documented medical-parole episodes, his return to prison in 1995 and serious health concerns.
Chinese authorities described Chen as a behind-the-scenes organizer or “black hand” of the 1989 protests. Those descriptions are retained only as attributed government allegations; the exact scope of his strategic role remains a source-sensitive historical question.
