Canonical person profile: Zhang Yi 张毅

Current case

Amnesty International reports that Zhang was detained in Lhasa on July 1, 2026 while visiting Sera Monastery with his younger brother, after showing a photograph of the Dalai Lama on his mobile phone. Amnesty says his family received a Criminal Detention Notice dated July 18 and that he was formally arrested on July 28 on suspicion of “inciting separatism” (煽动分裂国家罪). He is reported held at Lhasa Detention Centre.

1989 democracy movement

Radio Free Asia, Chinese Human Rights Defenders, and Amnesty International identify Zhang as a Wuhan pro-democracy activist whose political activity dates to the 1989 movement. RFA reported in August 2026 that he was then a Wuhan University law student and a Wuhan-area student leader, and that after June Fourth he received a two-year prison sentence.

Health and disability

Amnesty describes Zhang as a person with a disability and has raised concern for his wellbeing in detention. Amnesty and RFA report prior torture or other ill-treatment and serious hearing loss. These claims remain source-attributed pending recovery of primary prison or medical records.

Birthday in detention

On September 7, 2026, Amnesty International’s Chinese social-media account renewed calls for Zhang’s immediate and unconditional release around his birthday. Its graphic described him as spending his 61st birthday in detention. Free China Movement is not treating the exact age as independently resolved because RFA’s August 2026 reporting gives a 1968 birth year; this discrepancy remains under verification.
