Lü Xinhua / 吕新华

Hubei China Democracy Party founder · former political prisoner

Lü Xinhua (吕新华) is a Hubei democracy activist whose record links the 1998 China Democracy Party registration effort to a later subversion prosecution and four-year prison sentence.

1998 Hubei CDP organizing

Human Rights Watch and Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council identify Lü as one of the Hubei CDP preparatory-committee representatives who sought registration in September 1998. Contemporaneous VOA reporting also names Lü with Chen Zhonghe and Ren Qiuguang in the Hubei registration application. Later evidence places him in continuing Hubei CDP activity, while a reproduced February 6, 1999 United Headquarters notice places him on a broader committee; the exact later organizational appointment remains dependent on the original notice.

Arrest, prosecution and imprisonment

Source-controlled chronology records monitoring or residential surveillance from March 12, 2001, detention on March 18, arrest on April 20, and a four-year sentence reported later in 2001. Later reporting places his release in 2005. Sources differ on the exact judgment date, with November 14 and December 30 appearing in reporting; this profile preserves that discrepancy rather than normalizing it without the authenticated judgment.

Evidence controls

The media baseline includes Human Rights Watch, Taiwan MAC, VOA, U.S. State Department reporting, CPJ and a reproduced Wuhan legal text. Primary-source targets remain the original September 1998 registration application, November 26 branch documents, February 6 United Headquarters notice, authenticated 2001 indictment/judgment, and prison/release record.

Identity safeguard: this Lü Xinhua / 吕新华 is the Hubei democracy activist and must not be confused with the unrelated diplomat of the same name.
