Go Sherab Gyatso / 果·喜饶嘉措

Go Sherab Gyatso (果·喜饶嘉措; སྒོ་ཤེས་རབ་རྒྱ་མཚོ།), born in 1976, is a Tibetan monk, writer and scholar associated with Kirti Monastery in Ngaba. Rights groups report that he is serving a ten-year prison sentence following a 2020 detention and a case involving a charge of “inciting secession.”

Detention and proceedings

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy reported that Go Sherab Gyatso was detained on October 26, 2020 in Chengdu. In an August 2021 response to a United Nations communication, Chinese authorities said he had been detained on suspicion of inciting secession and would be tried by the Lhasa City Intermediate People’s Court.

Radio Free Asia, the International Campaign for Tibet, and TCHRD reported in December 2021 that he had received a ten-year sentence after a closed proceeding. No public verdict or court docket has been located, and the exact trial or sentencing date remains unconfirmed.

Custody and health

Human Rights Watch reported in February 2022 that associates outside Tibet said his health had worsened in custody and that he lacked adequate medical care. HRW noted that it could not independently verify those health reports. Monitoring organizations have identified Chushur/Qushui Prison near Lhasa as his reported place of imprisonment, but that location has not been officially confirmed.

Status and identity

USCIRF lists Go Sherab Gyatso as “Not Released,” and the International Campaign for Tibet continues to list him as imprisoned. Rights Defense Network Issue 131, dated August 31, 2026, also lists him among reported current detainees. He is distinct from Geshe Sherab Gyatso (1884–1968), a different Tibetan religious figure.
