On Ng Kin-wai’s Birthday, Remember the Courage of Hong Kong’s Democracy Movement
September 6, 2026 — Today, Hong Kong democracy activist Ng Kin-wai (伍健偉) marks his 31st birthday while imprisoned.
Ng, a former Yuen Long District Councillor, was prosecuted as part of the “Hong Kong 47” case arising from the opposition camp’s 2020 unofficial primary election. In November 2024, he was sentenced to five years and seven months in prison for conspiracy to commit subversion under Hong Kong’s National Security Law.
His case is part of a wider story. The Hong Kong 47 prosecution led to prison sentences for 45 pro-democracy activists and became one of the most consequential national-security cases since the 2020 law was imposed. Beijing and Hong Kong authorities have defended the prosecutions as lawful measures necessary for national security and stability. Rights groups, foreign governments and democracy advocates have argued that the case criminalized peaceful political participation and further narrowed Hong Kong’s civic space.
“No remorse” for democratic participation
During mitigation proceedings in 2024, Ng personally addressed the court and said he had no remorse for participating in the democratic primary. He defended his political choices as peaceful and grounded in his responsibilities to voters.
That refusal to renounce democratic participation gives this birthday particular meaning. Ng’s imprisonment is not only the story of one individual. It is a reminder of the courage shown by Hong Kong citizens who stood for elections, free expression, peaceful assembly and accountable government even as political space contracted around them.
FCM: Happy birthday — and a call for freedom
The Free China Movement wishes Ng Kin-wai a happy birthday and calls for his freedom. We also remember the many Hong Kong democracy advocates, journalists, organizers and civic leaders who remain imprisoned or prosecuted for peaceful political activity.
Hong Kong’s democratic movement has endured arrests, prosecutions, imprisonment, institutional restrictions and the closure or dissolution of many independent political and civic organizations. Yet repression cannot erase the principles for which so many Hong Kong citizens stood.
Their courage belongs not only to Hong Kong’s recent history. It remains part of the continuing struggle for freedom, constitutional government and human dignity throughout China.
FCM position: Peaceful participation in democratic politics should not be treated as subversion. The international community should continue raising individual prisoner cases, pressing for releases, and defending the fundamental freedoms promised to Hong Kong.

El Movimiento por una China Libre (FCM) expresa preocupación por los reportes basados en imágenes satelitales y fuentes locales sobre nuevas demoliciones de viviendas en la Academia Budista de Larung Gar, en el condado de Serthar, Sichuan, durante 2026. Radio Free Asia y la International Campaign for Tibet han descrito demoliciones continuadas a partir de imágenes satelitales, material visual y fuentes tibetanas.
Hasta el 5 de septiembre de 2026, FCM no ha localizado una decisión pública vigente de demolición, uso del suelo o planificación que confirme de forma independiente la escala reportada, el número de residentes afectados o la justificación oficial. Los documentos locales revisados incluyen proyectos de infraestructura, control de riesgos y administración, pero no demuestran por sí solos el programa residencial descrito.

Mientras no estén disponibles los documentos administrativos primarios, FCM no presenta la escala reportada ni la motivación gubernamental como hechos establecidos de forma independiente. Esa ausencia documental es precisamente una razón para exigir mayor transparencia oficial.

Solange primäre Verwaltungsunterlagen fehlen, stellt FCM den berichteten Umfang oder die behauptete staatliche Motivation nicht als unabhängig festgestellte Tatsache dar. Gerade diese Beweislücke begründet die Forderung nach größerer amtlicher Transparenz.

Free China Movement Calls for Publication of the Legal Basis for Reported Larung Gar Demolitions

The Free China Movement (FCM) is concerned by satellite- and source-based reporting indicating renewed demolition and clearance of residential structures at Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in Serthar County, Sichuan, during 2026.
Radio Free Asia and the International Campaign for Tibet have reported continued demolition based on satellite imagery, visual evidence and Tibetan sources. FCM has not located a current public demolition order, land-use decision or planning authorization that independently establishes the reported scope, the number of affected residents or the government’s stated rationale. Public local records reviewed to date include infrastructure, hazard-control and administrative projects in and around Larung Gar, but those records do not themselves establish the reported residential-clearance program.
FCM therefore calls on the responsible authorities to publish the governing legal and planning documents, maps of affected areas, data on residents and structures affected, notice procedures, compensation arrangements, relocation terms and available appeal or review mechanisms.
Larung Gar is an internationally significant center of Tibetan Buddhist learning. Any demolition or relocation affecting a major religious community should be governed by transparent law, meaningful notice, proportionate measures, fair compensation and an effective avenue of review.
FCM does not present the reported demolition scope or governmental motive as independently established facts where primary administrative records remain unavailable. That evidentiary gap is itself a reason for greater official transparency.
FCM calls for protection of peaceful religious practice, Tibetan cultural and educational life, property and residence rights, and independent access to reliable information about developments at Larung Gar.

Free China pide aplicar la ley de jornada, proteger frente a represalias, permitir denuncias independientes y evaluar en las cadenas de suministro coerción, retención de documentos, salarios retenidos, amenazas e imposibilidad de abandonar el empleo.
