Born in 1966, Fan Fan (樊凡) was a worker at the Yueyang Steel Ball Factory. Human-rights documentation records a seven-year prison sentence in the same post-June 1989 case as Hu Min; he is named among the eight Yueyang co-defendants. Quoted from CHRD: “Fan Fan (樊凡): born in 1966, worker at the Yueyang Steel Ball Factory, was sentenced to seven years in prison at the same case of Hu Min.”
The 1989 case
Fan was among the defendants in the Yueyang case: on the evening of June 7, 1989, thousands of Yueyang residents and students blocked the Beijing–Guangzhou railway with spare rails; crowds then marched and smashed the gates and nameplates of the Yueyang city government, and the Yueyang City Workers and Students Alliance (岳阳市工学联盟会) was founded with Hu Min as president. Song Yongyi’s case guide places the arrests on June 10, 1989, while the 2013 compendium and the Chinese Wikipedia Hunan chronology report June 9. Eight people were arrested in this group — Hu Min, Guo Yunqiao, Mao Yuejun, Fan Lixin, Pan Qiubao, Wan Yuewang, Wang Zhaobo and Fan Fan — and, in the words of the case guide, “severely punished.” The group was convicted of hooliganism (流氓罪), with sentences ranging from three years to life.
Evidence status
The documentary record presently supports Fan Fan’s identity, employment and sentence as stated above. The 2013 compendium reports that he was released in 1994; this is PROBABLE, single-secondary-source reporting rather than an independently verified release record. The original court judgment (no case number located) and an official prison-release record have not yet been found; no release chronology is documented, and anything not documented is marked RESEARCH PENDING.
Current status: unknown (no release record located).
