Evidence family: historical Chinese policy and democratic/reform responses, 1957 Compiled: 2026-09-24 (EDT) Register item closed: RH-C3 (labeled-persons dataset: labeled-person rosters, correction-outcome records)
(a) Roster series: how many were labeled — every figure with definition, method, provenance, uncertainty
No official published 1957 census of the labeled exists in the accessible record. The figures below are six different measurements (different dates, scopes, and definitions) and are not interchangeable. No bare number is given without these qualifications.
Series 1 — The correction-wave processing count: 552,973 (1978–80) [ATTRIBUTED]
- Definition: number of labeled-person files processed for correction during the 1978–80 correction wave. Composition: 552,877 corrected (改正) + 96 not corrected (5 centrally named + 91 local) = 552,973.
- Provenance: published by Bo Yibo in 《若干重大决策与事件的回顾》 (Looking Back on Certain Major Decisions and Events); presented in zh.wikipedia as “中共中央公布的信息” (information released by the CCP Center).
- Method: back-casting — the 1978–80 review machinery counted who it had to process; it does not independently establish how many were labeled in 1957–58.
- Uncertainty: (i) the figure measures processed files, not original labelings — deaths in custody/labor, files lost, and the military system are not separately disambiguated; (ii) the 96 sub-figure has no findable original CCP publication (Ran Yunfei, via Wu Yisan) — ATTRIBUTED-WEAK; (iii) a Sichuan-internal 1987 list alone names 21 un-corrected, implying the 96 national tail is likely an undercount.
- Grade: ATTRIBUTED; best described as the commonly documented correction-derived figure, not a 1957 census (CONFLICTING with Series 2).
Series 2 — UFWD contemporaneous accounting: 450,000 labeled [STRONG for the quotation]
- Definition: “全国划为资产阶级右派分子有四十五万人” — the nationwide labeled total as the United Front Work Department itself accounted it.
- Provenance: the April 5, 1978 United Front Work Department + Public Security report attached to 中发〔1978〕11号; the same report notes ~100,000+ still wearing the “hat” at that time and ~300,000+ un-hatted in five batches during 1959–64.
- Method: internal administrative accounting of active labeled-person files in 1978.
- Uncertainty: conflicts with Series 1 by ~100,000. One plausible reconciliation (ANALYTICAL INFERENCE, not fact): Series 1 counts files ever processed including resolved-back cases, while Series 2 counts persons still administratively listed in 1978. Pending the 1957–58 compiled roster, the gap is CONFLICTING, not settled.
Series 3 — September 1959 national statistics: 463,812 (excluding the military system) [ATTRIBUTED via secondary]
- Definition: “据1959年9月份统计,全国右派共有463,812人(不包括军事系统)”, of whom 53,684 were under re-education through labor (劳教) — 11.57% of the 463,812.
- Provenance: cited in a CUHK 《二十一世纪》 article on labor re-education and rightist processing (footnote chain fr/fs); the original statistical report not yet recovered (PST).
- Method: national administrative census of labeled persons, September 1959; explicitly excludes the military system.
- Uncertainty: original table not located; whether it includes 1958 补课 (supplementary labeling, Series 4) is not stated; military-system numbers remain UNKNOWN.
Series 4 — The 1957-H2 + 1958 反右补课 count: 53万多人 [ATTRIBUTED]
- Definition: “在一九五七年下半年的运动中和一九五八年的反右补课中划定的资产阶级右派分子,据有关部门公布的数字为五十三万多人” — the official count covering the second-half-1957 wave and the 1958 supplementary-labeling (补课) wave.
- Provenance: Zhu Zheng (朱正), 《两家争鸣——反右派斗争本末》, citing “有关部门公布” (published by relevant departments).
- Method: departmental published figure; the 反右补课 (1958 make-up/supplementary campaign) is the mechanism by which labeling continued past 1957 — i.e., there was no single 1957 census; labeling proceeded in at least two waves.
- Uncertainty: the “relevant departments” are not named by Zhu; the exact 补课 count is not separately published.
Series 5 — October 1961 labor-reeducation census: ~44,000 [ATTRIBUTED via secondary]
- Definition: per the report 《关于全国改造右派分子工作会议的报告》 forwarded by the Center on 1961-10-02: “按劳动教养处理
的右派份子共约四万四千余人,其中百分之八十以上已经教养三年以上”.
- Provenance: same CUHK 《二十一世纪》 article (footnote fs); original report text not yet recovered (PST).
- Method: national conference report on rightist “reform” work.
- Uncertainty: the drop from Series 3’s 53,684 (1959) is attributed in the secondary source to two causes — release from re-education upon un-hatting, and famine-era deaths among re-educated rightists (“据披露,当时有相当一批劳教右派被饿死”) — both stated as reported, not independently verified. The original report is a PST.
Series 6 — Hong Kong 《争鸣》 “declassified archive” claim: 3,178,470 rightists + 1,437,562 middle-rightists [UNCORROBORATED]
- Definition: as repeated in zh.wikipedia’s infobox: “全国实际划出右派分子超317万人,还有143万余人被贴上’中右分子’的标签”.
- Provenance: Wu Yisan (武宜三), 《右派知多少——反右六十周年研究》 (Independent Chinese PEN, 2017), traces the claim to Hong Kong 《争鸣》; no file number, photograph, or corroboration has been produced — treated by Wu as unsubstantiated.
- Grade: CONTRADICTED by Series 1–3 official administrative counts; UNCORROBORATED as an archival claim. Do not cite as a figure; cite only as a circulating claim with this caveat.
Estimate lineages (scholarly, non-official)
- Mao’s May 1957 estimate chain (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION — Zhu Zheng): Zhu ties the “~530,000” magnitude to Mao’s May 1957 estimate that rightists were 5–10% of ~5 million intellectuals — “大约就是从这里来的” [ATTRIBUTED]. Note: this is a planning estimate, not a count.
- Frank Dikötter, Mao’s Great Famine (2010): “targeting half a million people” [VERIFIED from the book text]. The extended “at least 550,000 and possibly more than 650,000” formulation is ATTRIBUTED via secondary citation (factsanddetails.com citing SCMP); the 650,000 upper bound was NOT re-verified.
- Ding Shu (丁抒), 《阳谋》: 1,200,000+ labeled, from a 200-county sample [ATTRIBUTED via Wu Yisan].
- Wu Yisan: county-gazetteer-based conservative estimate of 1.2–3.1 million labeled [ATTRIBUTED]. Wu separately traces Series 1’s 552,973 to Bo Yibo and notes the 96 sub-claim’s missing original publication.
Verdict on the “550,000” count — CONFLICTING (reiterated from prior file, refined)
The commonly circulating “550,000” traces to the 1978–80 correction-wave processing count (Series 1), which measures who was processed for correction decades later. Against it: the UFWD’s own contemporaneous accounting of 450,000 (Series 2); the September 1959 census of 463,812 excluding the military system (Series 3); and Zhu Zheng’s “53万多人” covering 1957-H2 + 1958 补课 (Series 4). The originally labeled total remains genuinely disputed: 450K ↔ 463K ↔ 550K ↔ unofficial scholarly 1.2M–3.1M ↔ the uncorroborated 3.18M claim. WHAT WOULD RESOLVE IT: the 1957–58 UFWD compiled national roster; provincial labeling statistics.
(b) The 1959–1964 un-hatting (摘帽) record
- September 17, 1959 — 中共中央《关于摘掉确实悔改的右派分子的帽子的指示》: on the 10th anniversary of the PRC, a batch of rightists judged “确实悔改” were to be un-hatted, with the 1959 batch “以控制在全国右派分子的20%左右为好” [ATTRIBUTED, zh.wikipedia citing the directive].
- November 2, 1959 — 中共中央关于摘掉右派帽子的人员的工作分配和生活待遇的规定 (中发(59)888号) [named in the 未获改正的右派 document list; full text not recovered this run].
- 1959–1964: ~300,000+ persons un-hatted in five successive batches; the work then stalled and was not resumed until the Cultural Revolution ended [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia 反右运动, citing official sources].
- Shanghai implementation detail [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia, citing Shanghai sources]: 15,419 persons labeled in the 1957 Shanghai campaign; most un-hatted in five batches before the Cultural Revolution under the September 17, 1959 directive.
- Note: un-hatting removed the label for administrative purposes; it did not constitute 改正 (correction) or 平反 (rehabilitation) — see §(c).
(c) The 1978–1980 correction campaign: mechanics and outcomes
Mechanics (document sequence) — baselines from prior file, detail added
- 1977: Hu Yaobang took charge of the Central Party School, then moved to head the Organization Department (December 15, 1977), launching the miscarriage-of-justice review work that would include the rightist cases [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia 反右运动].
- Spring 1978, Yantai meeting (United Front, Public Security, Organization, Propaganda, Civil Affairs departments): a sharp dispute — conservatives held that un-hatting plus proper placement without discrimination was sufficient and no 甄别平反 of the rightist cases was needed; Hu Yaobang’s side held that full, thorough rehabilitation of the miscarried cases was required. The conservative view prevailed at this stage [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia].
- April 5, 1978 (issued; Central approval dated April 8) — 中发〔1978〕11号: all rightists un-hatted nationwide; reaffirmed the campaign itself (“1957年反右本身没有错,问题是扩大化了”); addressed placement/treatment (promotion, wages, titles) but said nothing about rehabilitation. On May 2, 1978, Shanghai un-hatted its remaining 1,471 still-hatted rightists [ATTRIBUTED].
- After the May 1978 “practice is the sole criterion of truth” debate shifted the balance, the five departments met again in Beijing; the full-correction position won.
- September 17, 1978 — 中发〔1978〕55号 (the “No. 55 document,” implementation plan by the five departments): “对右派分子一般不搞甄别平反,对确实划错了的,要实事求是地予以改正”; “凡不应划右派而被错划了的,应实事求是地予以改正”; those approved for correction had political reputation restored, appropriate work assigned, original wages/treatment restored; Party members with no newly discovered serious problems had Party membership restored; expelled Youth League members had the expulsion revoked [ATTRIBUTED/STRONG — standard citation; prior file verified the 55号 wording via zh.wikipedia 未获改正的右派 quoting the plan].
- 1979–1980 follow-ons: 统发〔1979〕143号 (Feb 11, 1979 supplement); State Council/CMC supplement (May 3, 1979); 中发〔1979〕65号 (Sept 10, 1979); 中发〔1980〕42号 (May 18, 1980 — historical counterrevolutionaries who had re-worn the rightist hat); 中发〔1980〕50号 (June 11, 1980 — the “big rightists”/爱国人士 document; full text still not recovered — PST).
Terminology — the 改正 / 平反 / 摘帽 distinction (reiterated)
The Party deliberately used 改正 (correction of individual mislabelings) and declined 甄别平反 (rehabilitation/reversal), implying the campaign itself remained broadly legitimate — the 1978 document’s reaffirmation of the campaign confirms this. Deng Xiaoping’s key 1957 operational role is cited in scholarship as a reason full repudiation was off the agenda [ATTRIBUTED — prior file].
- 摘帽 (hat removal, 1959–64 and April 1978): administrative removal of the label.
- 改正 (correction, 1978–80): case-by-case finding that the person was wrongly labeled; restores reputation, work, wages, Party/Youth League status.
- 平反 (rehabilitation): used in 1978–80 only for related categories — the 中右分子 and 反社会主义分子 (315,000 persons, “一律给予平反,” zh.wikipedia 反右运动 [ATTRIBUTED]) — but NOT for rightists themselves.
Outcomes
- Correction work “basically completed” by September 1980 (Shanghai: 16,297 corrected by September 1980 — note: the count reflects persons under Shanghai jurisdiction after post-1957 administrative changes, per the source’s own caveat); nationwide correction and policy-implementation work completed by 1981 [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia].
- 552,877 corrected (改正) — 98%+ of the processed total; among the 106 provincial-level 爱国民主人士 labeled in Shanghai, 104 corrected [ATTRIBUTED].
- <100 not corrected: the five centrally named (below) plus local cases (below) — “只摘帽子,维持右派原案,不予改正”.
- “至1980年剩下5,000余名右派” — zh.wikipedia 反右运动 presents this as the still-un-corrected tail (“当前未获改正的右派”) [ATTRIBUTED-WEAK]. This CONFLICTS with the 96 figure. It is unclear whether the 5,000 refers to files still being processed in 1980 or to a larger de facto un-corrected population; the source does not resolve the reading. Grade: CONFLICTING/UNRESOLVED; neither figure can be taken as settled.
(d) The non-corrected roster
The five centrally named — never corrected in 1978–80 [PROBABLE/STRONG — zh.wikipedia 未获改正的右派; 1980-06-11 中发〔1980〕第50号]
Disposition for all five: 只摘帽子,维持右派原案,不予改正.
- Zhang Bojun (章伯钧) — (1895–1969). “China’s No. 1 bourgeois rightist”; stripped of nine posts January 1958, died May 17, 1969, Beijing (stomach cancer). Full 1957 record in the run-6 companion file §(a).2. [PROBABLE–STRONG]
- Luo Longji (罗隆基) — (1898–1965). Died December 7, 1965, Beijing (heart disease). Full 1957 record in the run-6 companion file §(a).2. [PROBABLE–STRONG]
- Peng Wenying (彭文应) — (1904-06-27 – 1962-12-15), Anfu, Jiangxi; one of the 安福三杰 (Luo Longji, Wang Zaoshi, Peng Wenying). Tsinghua school graduate; studied political science at the University of Wisconsin, then earned a master’s at Columbia. Shanghai lawyer-turned-political scientist; China Democratic League central committee member and Shanghai branch deputy director; post-1949: East China Military and Political Committee cultural-education committee member, Shanghai people’s deputy and CPPCC standing-committee member; visited Korea 1951 with the first Chinese people’s delegation to the front. Labeled a rightist 1957; died December 15, 1962 at Shanghai’s Guangci Hospital — one of the five never corrected [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia 彭文应].
- Chu Anping (储安平) — (1909–1966?, declared dead June 1982 by the United Front Work Department). Guangming Daily editor-in-chief; disappeared early September 1966 during the Cultural Revolution. One of the five never corrected. Full 1957 record and disappearance details in the run-6 companion file §(a).2. [STRONG for disappearance/declaration; manner of death UNKNOWN]
- Chen Renbing (陈仁炳) — (1909-12-15 – 1990-12-09), Wuchang, Hubei; son of the Christian educator Chen Chonggui. Shanghai St. John’s University professor and arts dean; Fudan history professor; Shanghai CPPCC deputy secretary-general; China Democratic League central committee member. His 1957 provocation was “反对乡原态度,提倡贾谊精神” (oppose the “village-worthy” posture, advocate the spirit of Jia Yi). Named in Zhang Chunqiao’s Liberation Daily article 《陈仁炳的”另外一条道路”是什么?》 and named by Mao in 《打退资产阶级右派的进攻》. His rightist hat was removed in April 1978 but he was not corrected — the only one of the five still alive when the non-correction decisions were made. After the Third Plenum he served as a fifth-session China Democratic League central committee member, a sixth-session Central Advisory Committee member, and adviser to the ninth Shanghai Democratic League committee — while formally remaining an un-corrected rightist. Died December 9, 1990 in Shanghai [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia 陈仁炳; 上海地方志].
Local un-corrected cases [ATTRIBUTED — zh.wikipedia 未获改正的右派; source citations as noted]
- Shanghai: of 106 provincial-level 爱国人士 labeled, 104 corrected; Peng Wenying and Chen Renbing not corrected [ATTRIBUTED].
- Others named in the tertiary list: 高风 (one of two internally designated non-corrected rightists in Shenyang); Lin Xiling (林希翎) — her non-correction is VERIFIED in the run-6 companion file §(a).3 (Renmin Party committee 不予改正 July 1979; five-agency joint meeting April 21, 1980: 不改正,不平反; Beijing High Court upheld May 13, 1980); 孙大雨 (Sun Dayu, English-literature scholar; details not further established this run).
- The tertiary list trails off with “……” — further local names exist but are not compiled here; the full local roll remains UNRESOLVED. The 91-local-places count (5+91=96) is ATTRIBUTED-WEAK (no original CCP publication located; Sichuan’s 21 alone against it).
Later-outcome evidence — no later reversal found for the five
No source located this run shows any of the five centrally named rightists being corrected or rehabilitated after 1980–81. Chen Renbing’s post-1978 Democratic League posts (see above) occurred without correction — the case of an un-corrected rightist restored to public positions anyway. Lin Xiling’s file was reviewed twice (July 1979, April 1980) and twice refused. Grade on “never corrected after 1981”: PROBABLE (absence-of-record inference; state as such).
(e) Named dissident/scholar positions on the figures and correction policy
- Zhu Zheng (朱正), 《两家争鸣——反右派斗争本末》 (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION): (1) the ~530,000 magnitude traces to Mao’s May 1957 estimate that rightists were 5–10% of ~5 million intellectuals; (2) the “有关部门公布” 53万多人 figure covers 1957-H2 and the 1958 反右补课; (3) the “章罗同盟/联盟” indictment is historically contested — Zhang Bojun and Luo Longji were long-time rivals, making “alliance” a political construct rather than a biographical fact [all ATTRIBUTED — run-6 baseline; extended-page-4 material from the trial-read PDF corroborates Zhang’s third-party military activities and the rivalry context].
- Wu Yisan (武宜三), 《右派知多少——反右六十周年研究》 (Independent Chinese PEN, 2017) (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION): (1) traces 552,973 to Bo Yibo’s memoir, not to a published CCP statistical release; (2) notes the “96 un-corrected” sub-claim has no findable original CCP publication; (3) county-gazetteer-based conservative estimate of 1.2–3.1 million labeled; (4) flags the Hong Kong 《争鸣》 3,178,470 + 1,437,562 “declassified archive” claim as uncorroborated (no file number, photo, or corroboration) [ATTRIBUTED — run-6 baseline, reconfirmed this run].
- Ding Shu (丁抒), 《阳谋》 (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION): sample-based estimate of 1,200,000+ labeled from 200 counties [ATTRIBUTED via Wu Yisan — run-6 baseline].
- Ran Yunfei (冉云飞) (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION, via Wu Yisan): attempted to locate the original publication of the “96 un-corrected” claim and could not; treats it as an unverified official claim [ATTRIBUTED — run-6 baseline].
- Frank Dikötter, Mao’s Great Famine (2010) (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION): the campaign as “targeting half a million people” [VERIFIED from the book text]; the “possibly more than 650,000” upper bound NOT re-verified this run [ATTRIBUTED via secondary — run-6 baseline].
- Scholarship on the correction policy (NAMED SCHOLAR POSITION): Jin Guantao/Liu Qingfeng 《二十一世纪》 1997 account of the 1978 documentary sequence (run-6 baseline); Deng Xiaoping’s key 1957 operational role is cited in scholarship as a reason full repudiation was off the agenda in 1978–80 [ATTRIBUTED — run-6 baseline]. The Yantai-meeting conservative position (un-hatting + placement sufficient; no rehabilitation) vs. Hu Yaobang’s position (thorough, complete rehabilitation) is documented in the tertiary record [ATTRIBUTED this run].
- Contemporaneous 1957 dissent captured inside the roster: Lin Xiling’s 1979 refusal to write a self-criticism despite three rehabilitation instructions from Hu Yaobang, and her 1980 final 不改正/不平反 disposition, are a documented case of a labeled person refusing the correction terms offered [VERIFIED — run-6 companion file].
(f) Official PRC position
- Then (1978–80): the correction documents reaffirmed the 1957 campaign as “伟大的社会主义革命” (great socialist revolution on the political and ideological fronts); only its “严重扩大化” (serious expansion) was faulted; the remedy was 改正 of individual mislabelings, explicitly not 甄别平反. [STRONG — run-6 baseline from the scanned 中发〔1978〕11号]
- Now (post-1981): the June 27, 1981 Resolution formula — counterattack “完全正确和必要,” scope “严重地扩大化,” no headcount — stands unrevised; no later official document has corrected the five central cases or the un-corrected local cases [ATTRIBUTED — run-6 baseline; “no later document” is an absence-of-record inference, stated as such].
(g) Civil-society and international-institution positions
- Laogai Research Foundation archive: hosts the scanned Central Committee documents underpinning the correction series (中发〔1978〕11号, scan A780405.pdf; the 1957 06-10 and 10-15 scans) — the primary-source basis for the VERIFIED/STRONG document record [VERIFIED as scans — run-6 baseline; A780405.pdf URL re-fetched this run].
- CUHK 《二十一世纪》 articles: the secondary-provenance carrier for Series 3 (1959 statistics) and Series 5 (1961 labor-reeducation census) figures [ATTRIBUTED this run — the figures are cited-via; originals are PSTs].
- No contemporaneous independent civil-society positions: criticism was channeled through the 1957 Rectification forums and press, then criminalized; the 1959–1980s correction outcomes were decided inside the Party-state apparatus. The 1978 Yantai debate (conservative vs. Hu Yaobang positions) is the closest available record of contested positions within the system [ANALYTICAL INFERENCE — run-6/this-run].
(h) Source conflicts
Conflict A — Labeled total: 450,000 vs 463,812 vs 552,973 (extends run-6 Conflict 5)
- SOURCE A: April 5, 1978 UFWD report — 450,000 labeled (contemporaneous administrative accounting).
- SOURCE B: September 1959 national statistics (via CUHK) — 463,812, excluding the military system.
- SOURCE C: Bo Yibo 1978–80 correction statistics — 552,877 corrected + 96 un-corrected = 552,973.
- BEST AVAILABLE INTERPRETATION: three different measurements (1978 internal accounting vs. 1959 census-ex-military vs. 1978–80 processed files). The 450K/463K figures are much closer to each other than to 552K; the 552,973 figure likely counts files processed across the whole 1978–80 window including cases resolved under the earlier five un-hatting batches. None is an independent 1957 census.
- CONFIDENCE: medium-high. WHAT WOULD RESOLVE IT: the 1957–58 UFWD compiled national roster; provincial labeling statistics; the original 1959-09 statistical report.
Conflict B — Un-corrected headcount: 96 vs 5,000+
- SOURCE A: “96 (5 central + 91 local)” as “中共中央公布的信息”.
- SOURCE B: Ran Yunfei (via Wu Yisan) — no original publication located; Sichuan alone lists 21 (1987 internal list).
- SOURCE C: zh.wikipedia 反右运动 — “至1980年剩下5,000余名右派” presented as the still-un-corrected tail.
- BEST AVAILABLE INTERPRETATION: the 96 is an unverified official claim; the true un-corrected number is likely higher; the 5,000 figure’s meaning (files in process vs. final un-corrected) is not resolvable from the cited source. CONFLICTING/UNRESOLVED.
- WHAT WOULD RESOLVE IT: full text of 中发〔1980〕第50号; local internal lists (Sichuan 1987 list original; Shenyang’s two; others).
Conflict C — The 《争鸣》 3.18M claim vs. all administrative counts (extends run-6’s Hong Kong-claim note)
- The 3,178,470 + 1,437,562 figures are CONTRADICTED by every official administrative count (450K–553K band) and are UNCORROBORATED as archival claims. They should not be cited as figures; only as a circulating claim with this grading.

(j) Corrections to earlier project records (reconciliation note)
- This file refines the run-6 file’s §(e) “Figures” note: the 552,973 total is now graded as one of six non-interchangeable series (Series 1) rather than the standalone figure of record; the 450,000 vs 552,973 conflict is extended with the September 1959 census (463,812, ex-military) and the 1958 反右补课 wave, which did not appear in the run-6 file.
- The run-6 file flagged “至1980年剩下5,000余名右派” as ambiguous; this run confirms the source (zh.wikipedia 反右运动) presents it as the still-un-corrected tail while the 96-claim stands beside it — the two are CONFLICTING, and the reading (in-process files vs. final un-corrected) remains UNRESOLVED. Neither earlier record settled this.
- New biographical detail added for the two least-documented central cases (Peng Wenying, Chen Renbing) — neither appeared in the run-6 file’s 1957 coverage; Chen Renbing’s post-1978 Democratic League posts while formally un-corrected is a new later-outcome fact.
- The Sichuan 21-person internal list (1987) and the named local cases (高风, 孙大雨) are new to the project record; the full local un-corrected roll remains UNRESOLVED.
Register item resolution note
RH-C3 (labeled-persons dataset) — SUBSTANTIALLY ANSWERED: six roster series documented with definitions, methods, provenance, and uncertainty (none re-researched from the run-6 baselines); 1959–64 un-hatting and 1978–80 correction mechanics documented; the five central non-corrected cases profiled with the two previously thin cases (Peng Wenying, Chen Renbing) filled in; Sichuan/local un-corrected lists compiled; named scholarly positions (Zhu Zheng, Wu Yisan, Ding Shu, Ran Yunfei, Dikötter) on figures and correction policy documented. Remaining: the seven primary-source targets above (especially the 1957–58 compiled national roster, the 1980-06-11 No. 50 document full text, and the Bo Yibo 96-count original publication). Terminal state: PRIMARY-SOURCE-GAP (missing-primary only).
