Why this book matters
Wang Xing’s 2026 book is a major participant-authored contribution to the organizational history of the 1989 democracy movement. It moves beyond leader-centered narratives to examine how NAFUS—an autonomous federation representing students from universities outside Beijing—formed, coordinated, made decisions, worked with other student bodies, and endured repression.
FCM editorial assessment: This is an essential work for serious study of the movement’s organizational dimension. Its greatest value is the combination of participant memory, records accumulated over decades, and an explicit attempt to reconstruct institutional action. As with every participant-authored history, individual claims should also be compared with contemporaneous documents, independent reporting, and testimony from other participants.

June 2026 launch and assessments
The book was launched at a June 2, 2026 symposium in New York organized by the NAFUS Alumni Research Association and Human Rights in China, with support from NYU’s U.S.–Asia Law Institute. Andrew J. Nathan wrote the foreword; participants and commentators included Hu Ping, Zhou Fengsuo, Wang Juntao, Wang Chaohua, Zhao Changqing, Zhao Xin and others.
