Dong Jianbiao (董建彪) was a coal miner from Hunan and the father of Dong Yaoqiong. After his daughter’s 2018 protest and psychiatric hospitalization, he spent years publicly seeking access to her and speaking about her treatment.
Dong was serving a three-year prison sentence when his family was notified in September 2022 that he had died at Chaling Prison. The prison reportedly said he had died of illness. Relatives told media outlets that they saw bruises and other injuries on his body. A family friend publicly stated his belief that Dong had been beaten to death; that was an attributed opinion, not an independent finding.
No public independent investigation, autopsy report or medical finding has established the cause or circumstances of his death. Sources also differ on whether the death occurred on September 22 or September 23, 2022.
