Wen Jie (温杰) — Died After Release, 1991

Wen Jie (温杰) was a young scholar and participant in the 1989 protest movement who died on December 20, 1991, after release from roughly eighteen months of imprisonment.

Contemporary reporting and later human-rights documentation say Wen developed cancer while in custody. His family and supporters alleged that needed treatment had been withheld. Sources differ on the cancer type, and no independent investigation or prison medical record reviewed here establishes that the reported lack of treatment caused his death.

Wen did not die inside prison. His case is preserved here as a post-release death with documented allegations concerning medical care during detention.

About one hundred people attended his funeral in Beijing on December 24, 1991. Human-rights reporting documented the detention and interrogation of several former cellmates and other mourners afterward.
