Ye Zhong (叶钟), a human-rights activist from Fuzhou, Fujian, died while in police custody in October 2023.
Ye became known for assisting people affected by forced demolitions and for speaking publicly about transparency, human rights and democracy. Authorities told relatives that he died of a sudden myocardial infarction while detained in Jin’an District. Family members and friends disputed that account and alleged torture. No public medical record or independent investigation has established the cause of death.
Ye’s wife, Li Meiying, was reported missing after his detention; her fate remains unknown.
