Zhou Guocong (周国聪) — Died in Chengdu Police Custody, June 1989

Zhou Guocong (周国聪) was a teenage factory worker in Chengdu who died in police custody in June 1989 after being detained during the post-crackdown sweep.

Amnesty International reported in 2006 that Zhou, whom it described as 15, was beaten to death by police in Chengdu on June 7, 1989. Other sources place his death on June 6, and a later NPR report gives his age as 17. This memorial preserves those unresolved differences.

In 2006, local authorities paid his mother, Tang Deying (唐德英), 70,000 yuan described as “hardship assistance,” explicitly not compensation. The payment followed years of petitions and campaigning by his family.
