Chen Xiaobin (陈晓彬) was a Falun Gong practitioner from Jieyang City, Guangdong Province. She, her husband Wu Meiping, and their son Wu Xuqin were repeatedly targeted by authorities for their shared faith from 1999 onward. She was arrested in May 2017, sentenced to two and a half years in prison in 2019, and released in November 2019. Her health never recovered from the detention, and she died on May 1, 2023, at the age of 48.
Two decades of targeting
The family first drew official attention in 1999, when the elder Mr. Wu traveled to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong and was disabled by a police beating; he later recovered and was sent to the Sanshui Forced Labor Camp. In November 2002, Chen and her husband were arrested and taken to a brainwashing center, leaving their three children — the oldest only seven — unattended. The couple were arrested again in 2003 and held at a local lockup.
The 2017 WeChat case
On May 22, 2017, police from the Dongsheng Police Station arrested the family’s son, Wu Xuqin, at his workplace, a small company in Jiexi County. Police had been monitoring the company after discovering Falun Gong-related information on its WeChat account. Officers then went to the family home, ransacked it, sealed the door, and arrested Chen. Eight practitioners were detained that day.
Trial, sentence, release
Chen was among five practitioners — company owner Wu Chunxiong, Wu Xuqin, Tang Jianqun, Chen, and Cai Linhua — indicted by the Rongcheng District Procuratorate on January 29, 2019 and tried by the Rongcheng District Court on March 19, 2019. In mid-May 2019, the court sentenced Chen and Cai Linhua each to two and a half years; Wu Chunxiong received eight and a half years, Tang Jianqun eight years, and Wu Xuqin seven and a half years. All five appealed, and the Jieyang City Intermediate Court upheld the verdicts in late October 2019. Chen and Cai served their terms at the Jieyang City Detention Center and were released on November 21, 2019, having completed their sentences.
Death
Minghui reported on June 14, 2023 that Chen, then 48, had struggled with poor health after her release and died on May 1, 2023, three and a half years after serving her term. Her son was still serving his sentence at the time of the report.
Status note
Her name appears in the 维权网 (Rights Defense Network) Issue 131 roster of reported current-custody cases dated August 31, 2026. No evidence of any re-arrest after her November 2019 release was located, and her death was reported in detail in June 2023. The roster entry is therefore treated as a likely stale carry-over and is not relied on for her status. This profile is built on the Minghui and Falun Dafa reporting record; Minghui is affiliated with the Falun Gong movement, and its reports should be read with that affiliation in mind.
