Chen Ziming was a Beijing public intellectual, researcher, publisher and democracy advocate who, with Wang Juntao, helped build the Beijing Social and Economic Sciences Research Institute in the 1980s. After the 1989 crackdown, PRC authorities accused Chen and Wang of being behind the protest movement and sentenced each to thirteen years in prison in 1991. Those official “black hand” or “manipulator” descriptions are preserved as attributed state allegations, not accepted as proof that Chen exercised operational command over the student movement. Later sources document imprisonment, medical parole, house arrest, continued research and writing, and his death in 2014.
