Mission and editorial role
The organization says its mission is to promote democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of publication in China by encouraging debate on constitutional and legal reform, providing an electronic platform for Chinese writers, facilitating exchange among activists and scholars, and publishing research on democratic transition.
Liu Xiaobo and Charter 08 connection
Democratic China’s own historical accounts state that Liu Xiaobo served as president and editor-in-chief after the 2006 reorganization, with Zhang Zuhua and Cai Chu also taking key editorial roles. The organization later described its editorial team as having played an important role in the Charter 08 movement. Because these claims concern Democratic China’s own institutional history, they are presented here with attribution to the organization.
Documented impact and relevance
Democratic China has functioned for decades as a Chinese-language publishing platform for essays on constitutionalism, civil society, political transition and human rights. Its archive documents debate within the Chinese democracy movement across multiple generations. Its association with Liu Xiaobo and Zhang Zuhua also makes the publication particularly relevant to research on Charter 08, intellectual networks and overseas support structures for democratic-transition discourse.
Coalition activity
In 2023, Democratic China joined China Action, Citizen Power Initiatives for China, the Chinese Democratic Education Foundation and China in Perspective in organizing a joint essay competition on authoritarianism and nonviolent action. In 2017 it also co-published a Liu Xiaobo memorial collection with the Institute for China’s Democratic Transition.
