Gangbu Yudrum (also reported as Gangbu Youbo; Chinese: 岗布优博) is a Tibetan monk and political activist from Serta (Serthar) County in Kardze (Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. The romanized roster entry “Gangbuyou” is reconciled here to Gangbu Yudrum because independent reporting identifies the same name variant, Tibetan case context, and current seven-year sentence.
Detention and sentence
Radio Free Asia reported that Gangbu Yudrum was taken into custody on March 22, 2021. In September 2022, the Kardze Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to seven years in prison on charges reported as “inciting separatism” and “endangering state security.” The U.S. Department of State later cited the same group sentencing, and the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy also records his seven-year term.
A 2026 Tibetan prisoner profile reports an expected release date of March 21, 2028 and identifies Mianyang Prison in Sichuan as his detention location. Because prison-location information can change and is difficult to independently confirm, FreeChina treats that location as source-reported rather than independently verified.
Earlier imprisonment and activism
RFA and the International Campaign for Tibet report that Gangbu Yudrum previously served a three-year prison term after participating in a 2008 protest in which he raised the Tibetan national flag and called for the return of the Dalai Lama. He was released on February 19, 2011. He was arrested again on May 14, 2012 and served a two-year term connected to his role in co-founding a protest group opposing Chinese Communist Party rule. After his release, reporting says he circulated a letter urging Tibetans to continue working for political freedom.
Current status
Source-reported current prisoner. Rights Defense Network / 维权网 Issue 131, dated August 31, 2026, includes the roster entry “Gangbuyou.” Independent sources establish Gangbu Yudrum’s 2021 arrest and seven-year sentence. FreeChina does not infer any change in custody beyond the dated sources cited here.
