Wang Juntao / 王军涛
Wang Juntao is a Chinese democracy activist and political organizer associated with reform and independent social-science networks in the 1980s. Human Rights Watch records his work at the Beijing Social and Economic Sciences Research Institute and as deputy editor of Economics Weekly.
After the 1989 crackdown he was arrested. Amnesty International reported that on February 12, 1991 he was sentenced to thirteen years’ imprisonment with four years’ deprivation of political rights. Amnesty’s April 1994 follow-up documented his release for medical treatment on April 23, 1994 and immediate travel to the United States.
Chinese authorities described Wang as a behind-the-scenes organizer of the 1989 protests. Such official labels are preserved as attributed allegations rather than adopted as settled historical fact.
