Restore FreeChina.net & Preserve the Digital Archive

Help recover a historic Free China domain and preserve the digital record associated with our earlier work.

Why this campaign matters

FreeChina.net, a domain historically associated with our work and a substantial body of archived material, is no longer under our control. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the loss of control of the domain and working to determine what historical data can still be recovered from previous hosting systems and backups.

The current holder of FreeChina.net is not authorized to represent the Free China Movement.

We are preparing a public fundraising campaign to support recovery or reacquisition of FreeChina.net where feasible, recovery and preservation of historical digital materials, reconstruction of missing portions of the archive, and redundant long-term preservation infrastructure so that this historical record does not again depend on a single domain or hosting provider.

Use of funds

  • Domain recovery or negotiated reacquisition where feasible
  • Hosting-provider, backup, archive, and data-recovery work
  • Preservation and reconstruction of historical website materials
  • Secure redundant storage and long-term digital-archive infrastructure
  • Reasonable technical, administrative, and professional costs directly related to the recovery effort

We intend to publish material updates on the recovery effort and provide transparency concerning the use of campaign funds.

The fundraising link will be activated after the campaign account and beneficiary information are established.
