September 7, 2026 — China’s defense establishment is accelerating research into the military use of humanoid robots, according to a Reuters review of more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, academic studies, patents, official publications, government records and defense-company materials.
What the evidence shows
Reuters found research and testing focused on reconnaissance, logistics, hazardous missions, perception, manipulation and possible urban-combat applications. The PLA Daily has urged researchers to move advanced robotics from laboratories into military training environments. One National University of Defense Technology project described a possible five-to-ten-year path toward deployment in urban assault teams.
The evidence supports a conclusion that military research and experimentation are advancing. It does not establish that autonomous humanoid combat units are currently fielded, combat-proven or authorized to make lethal decisions without meaningful human control.

The governance question is larger than whether a robot can walk, carry equipment or recognize a target. Democratic security policy should require clear human responsibility for any use of force, auditable command authority, rigorous testing, and public legal standards for autonomous and semi-autonomous weapons. China’s rapid commercial robotics base may shorten development cycles, but technical maturity, reliability and lawful battlefield use are separate questions.
