What happened
Public reports from Minsheng Watch, Rights Network/CHINAHRC and a ChinaAid report republished by InGrace describe the same sequence: Sun Chao, a 37-year-old preacher associated with an unregistered house church in Qujing, Yunnan, was taken by Xuanwei police on July 25 and placed in 12 days of administrative detention over alleged illegal religious activity. When that detention was due to end on August 7, his wife Zhao Ying was told that he had instead been transferred into criminal detention on suspicion of “organizing illegal gatherings.” Rights Network reports that he is held at Xuanwei Detention Center.
The same sources report that Sun has epilepsy and requires regular medication. His family has publicly expressed concern about whether detention authorities will ensure uninterrupted access to that medicine. This is a reported medical-risk concern; no public detention-center medical record independently confirms his current treatment.
Why it matters
The case is significant because a short-term administrative religious-control measure appears to have escalated into criminal detention at the moment release was expected. That raises questions about the legal basis for criminalizing peaceful house-church activity, access to counsel and family information, and whether essential medication is being maintained in custody.

Religious belief and peaceful worship should not become a pathway from short-term administrative punishment into open-ended criminal detention. Sun Chao should have access to counsel, his family should receive clear legal information, and any medication required to control epilepsy should not be interrupted because he is in custody.
The broader rule-of-law issue is equally important. When authorities convert an administrative detention into criminal detention as release is due, the public should be able to see the legal basis, the alleged conduct and the procedural safeguards being applied. Religious regulation cannot substitute for transparent criminal process.
