Tong Yi / 童屹

Canonical ID: DISS-TONG-YI

Profile status: Source-supported canonical profile; continuing archival enrichment.

Overview

Tong Yi (童屹) is a Chinese democracy activist who worked as an aide to Wei Jingsheng. Her case became the subject of international human-rights reporting during the 1990s.

Detention and forced-labor custody

Amnesty International identified Tong as Wei Jingsheng’s assistant and documented her imprisonment at Hewan Labour Camp, treating her as a prisoner of conscience. Contemporary reporting records that she was detained following Wei’s 1994 arrest, received a two-and-a-half-year reeducation-through-labor term, and was released in 1996.

Exit and later life

Contemporaneous reporting subsequently placed Tong in the United States, including study at Columbia University after her departure from China. This profile therefore treats the 1990s custody as historical and does not classify her as currently imprisoned.
