Deng Yuanguo — Huaihua Teacher and RTL Case

Deng Yuanguo

Classification: Hunan civic/pro-democracy case; administrative reeducation through labor (RTL). Current status: unknown.

Asia Watch’s 1992 report Anthems of Defeat identifies Deng Yuanguo as a 32-year-old teacher at Huaihua No. 1 Middle School. During the 1989 Democracy Movement, the report says, he publicly appealed in support of the student cause and was placed under “shelter and investigation” for a period after June 4.

The same source reports a second detention after the failed August 1991 Soviet coup, following statements calling for the Soviet Communist Party to step down. He was then given two years of reeducation through labor. This was administrative detention, not a criminal-court sentence.

Evidence limits

No original RTL decision, release record, later biography, or current-status source is presently available. The nominal term must not be used to infer release. Conduct descriptions should remain source-attributed.
