Chen Ziming / 陈子明 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical Chen Ziming / 陈子明 profile.

Documented chronology

A July 1991 Asia Watch report reproduces the Beijing Intermediate People’s Court judgment: Chen Ziming received twelve years for conspiring to subvert the government and three years for counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement, combined into a thirteen-year term with four years’ subsequent deprivation of political rights, calculated through October 10, 2002. The judgment is unusually strong primary-source evidence for the sentence.

Amnesty International documented Chen as a prisoner of conscience and, in 1995, reported his return to prison after medical parole amid serious health concerns. Contemporary and later reporting records further medical parole and restrictions. Official descriptions of Chen as a “mastermind” or “black hand” are treated here as attributed government allegations.

Evidence notes

The reproduced judgment provides unusually specific sentencing evidence. Claims about Chen’s exact strategic role in the 1989 movement remain source-sensitive because government allegations, participant accounts and later descriptions do not necessarily use the same characterization.
