Wan Runnan (万润南) — Media Profile & Archive

Person profile: Wan Runnan (万润南)

This archive collects dated reporting on Wan Runnan (1946–2025), founder of the Stone computer company and a participant in post-1989 overseas democracy organizing. Government accusations and later retrospective claims are attributed to their sources.

Stone and the 1989 movement

Contemporary reporting identified Wan as the founder and head of Stone Corp. and documented official action against him after the 1989 movement. UPI, citing Xinhua, reported in August 1989 that Stone dismissed him and that a Communist Party committee expelled him, while recording the government’s allegations as allegations.

Escape and exile organizing

Associated Press reporting carried by The Washington Post reported in June 1989 that Wan had escaped the crackdown and reached the West. Contemporary Washington Post coverage later documented his participation in overseas organizing alongside Yan Jiaqi and other exiles.

Human-rights and documentary record

Human Rights in China includes Wan in its “1989, Recall of Memory” documentary series, describing the installment as “Wan Runnan – From Popular Entrepreneur to Democracy Activist.” This is useful audiovisual provenance but does not replace dated reporting for disputed chronology.

Death and retrospective reporting

Le Monde reported that Wan died in Créteil, France, on October 13, 2025 at age 78. Its retrospective account described his founding of Stone, support for the 1989 movement and later exile in France.

Archive note: Exact organization titles and tenure dates are kept tied to dated sources. The archive does not infer offices, funding amounts or operational authority beyond documented evidence.
