Ou Daoqi (欧道齐)
Ou Daoqi (欧道齐) is a netizen from Changsha, Hunan Province, who was detained by police in May 2019 after posting a one-sentence criticism of Xi Jinping in a WeChat group.
According to Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), Changsha police criminally detained Mr. Ou on May 7, 2019, on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” — the charge commonly applied to online speech deemed politically sensitive. CHRD reported that Mr. Ou had written the WeChat message on April 29, 2019. His detention came amid a nationwide pre-emptive crackdown ahead of the 30th anniversary of the June 1989 crackdown in Beijing, during which authorities detained, disappeared, or forced into travel dozens of activists and netizens to prevent any commemoration of the anniversary.
CHRD further reported that police had threatened Mr. Ou’s family not to publicize his detention, so it was not known to the public until late May 2019. At the time of CHRD’s last update in July 2019, his location was unknown.
No information has been publicly reported about Mr. Ou’s age, occupation beyond his online activity, or what happened after his detention — no trial, sentence, or release has been documented in available sources. His whereabouts since 2019 are unknown.
