Wen Jie (温杰, c. 1965–1991) was a Peking University master’s graduate who took part in the 1989 protest movement and later served as a deputy head of the propaganda section of the Command Center to Protect Tiananmen Square.
Imprisonment and illness
Wen was detained after June 4, 1989 and imprisoned for about eighteen months, including time at Qincheng Prison. Contemporary and near-contemporary sources report that he developed cancer while imprisoned. Sources differ on whether it was described as intestinal, stomach, or colon cancer, so this profile does not assert a single clinical form.
Release and death
Wen was released and died on December 20, 1991, roughly a year after leaving custody. His family and supporters told contemporaneous reporters and human-rights researchers that he had not received adequate treatment for cancer while imprisoned and blamed the authorities for his death. Those claims are attributed; no independent investigation or prison medical record reviewed here establishes the causal link.
His funeral in Beijing on December 24, 1991 drew about one hundred mourners. Human-rights reporting later documented the detention and questioning of several former cellmates and other participants after the funeral.
Custody-status note
Wen Jie did not die in physical custody. This record classifies his case as a post-release death following imprisonment in which medical-treatment allegations remain part of the documented record.
