Joshua Wong / 黃之鋒

Joshua Wong (黃之鋒) is a Hong Kong democracy activist known for student-led political organizing since his teens. He founded Scholarism in 2011, became a prominent figure during the 2014 Umbrella Movement, and later served as secretary-general of Demosistō until the group disbanded in 2020.

Hong Kong 47 case

Wong was arrested in January 2021 with other participants in the July 2020 unofficial democratic primary. On November 19, 2024, the High Court sentenced him to four years and eight months’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit subversion under Hong Kong’s National Security Law.

Second national-security case

On June 6, 2025, while already serving the Hong Kong 47 sentence, Wong was arrested and charged in a second national-security case with conspiracy to collude with a foreign country or external elements. Prosecutors alleged conduct connected to requests for foreign sanctions and other actions in 2020.

On September 2, 2026, Wong pleaded guilty to the collusion charge. Sentencing in that second case had not yet been fixed in the latest reviewed reporting.

Status and evidence limits

Wong remains imprisoned. Before the second case was brought, Reuters reported that his Hong Kong 47 sentence was expected to end in January 2027. Because the second case has not yet resulted in a final sentence, no aggregate release date is stated or inferred.
