Jie’ensi Resihan / 杰恩斯·热斯汉

Jie’ensi Resihan (杰恩斯·热斯汉) is a Kazakh writer, playwright and performer from Barkol Kazakh Autonomous County in Hami, Xinjiang. Rights groups report that he has been detained since March 2026 and remained in custody awaiting trial as of August 31, 2026.

Background

Chinese rights-monitoring and advocacy sources describe Jie’ensi as born in 1968 and as a writer associated with Hami’s literary community, including work with the Kazakh-language section of Hami Literature. Sources list several literary awards and published works.

2026 detention

China Political Prisoner Concern and Rights Defense Network report that Jie’ensi lost contact on March 19, 2026 in Barkol and was later learned to have been taken by local police. No formal charging document has been made public.

Amnesty International issued an urgent action in July 2026 concerning his detention. Other reporting states that police verbally accused him of holding or promoting “extremist thought,” but those descriptions are reported allegations rather than established formal charges.

Lawyer access and postponed trial

Rights groups report that a lawyer was able to meet Jie’ensi in late July 2026 and that he refused to sign a confession concerning alleged “extremist thought.” A closed-door trial reportedly scheduled for August 17 was later postponed, with jurisdiction moved from Barkol county court to a Hami city court.

Status and evidence limits

Rights Defense Network Issue 131 lists Jie’ensi among newly detained or disappeared cases as of August 31, 2026. No sentence has been reported. Health concerns and reports of pressure on his family remain source-attributed. His ethnicity is Kazakh; he should not be described as Uyghur merely because Uyghur-focused organizations have covered the case.
