Li Xuezhi (李学志)

Li Xuezhi (李学志) is a farmer from Longxing Town in Chongqing’s Yubei District who became a petitioner after the forced occupation of his farmland and the demolition of his home in 2013, and who was detained in May 2024 after attending a dinner celebrating the inauguration of the ROC (Taiwan) president.

According to a 2024 report by The Epoch Times, Li was 53 years old and had been petitioning authorities since 2013, when his complaints about the forced occupation of his farmland and demolition of his house went unaddressed. The report says he later petitioned higher authorities in Beijing and joined other rights-abuse victims in Chongqing in collective advocacy.

The report, citing renminbao.com, states that in May 2021 Li and other Chongqing petitioners were detained at the Jiujingzhuang facility in Beijing after traveling to petition. It further reports that after Li posted a video in February 2022, police raided his home and he was formally arrested on suspicion of “intentional injury” on March 29, 2022. The outcome of that case was not documented in the prepared sources.

In May 2024, Li attended a May 20 banquet in Chongqing where people gathered to celebrate the inauguration of ROC (Taiwan) President Lai Ching-te. According to his family’s account as reported by The Epoch Times, a person claiming to be a police officer took Li away around 12:30 a.m. on May 26; family members were later told at Longxing Police Station that he had been criminally detained. The family said they were not told the specific charges and had not received an official detention notice. Minsheng Watch, as cited in secondary reporting, said Li was arrested after attending the dinner and uploading a video of participants toasting the democratically elected ROC (Taiwan) president.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, in a human-rights data compilation cited by secondary media, later reported that Li Xuezhi (李學志) had been indicted over the video. The underlying indictment document was not located in the prepared evidence packet.

The Rights Defense Network (维权网), in its August 31, 2026 monthly report, lists 李学志 among people detained awaiting trial in Chongqing. No later update on his case was found.
