Li Huaiqing (李怀庆) is a businessman and philanthropist from Chongqing who was sentenced in November 2020 to twenty years in prison.
Detention, trial and sentence
Chinese Human Rights Defenders reports that Li was detained on January 31, 2018. CHRD and Radio Free Asia report that he was tried on June 8, 2020 and sentenced on November 20, 2020 by the Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court to twenty years in prison.
The reported convictions were inciting subversion of state power, fraud, extortion, and illegal detention. RFA reported that evidence cited for the subversion count included Li’s WeChat posts and private chats and that authorities froze assets estimated at about 100 million yuan. Those are reported court/prosecution findings and media accounts, not independently established facts here.
Family and defense response
RFA reported that Li’s wife, Bao Yan, disputed the prosecution’s account and that defense counsel challenged the verdict. CHRD characterized the detention as retaliatory; that assessment remains attributed to CHRD.
Status and evidence limits
Rights Defense Network Issue 131 lists 李怀庆 among reported current prisoners in its twenty-year-sentence group as of August 31, 2026. No current prison facility, post-2026 status, official judgment text, or PRC state-media account was located.
