Ren Zhiqiang Reportedly Alive but Gravely Ill in Custody; Urgent Medical Care Needed

Rapid Response — October 5, 2026

Chinese entrepreneur and outspoken public figure Ren Zhiqiang is reportedly alive, contrary to recent online rumors of his death, but is said to be in extremely poor health and in urgent need of adequate medical care.

On October 5, journalist Akio Yaita said on X that he had confirmed through what he described as a trusted special channel that Ren is alive. Yaita reported that the 75-year-old remains in custody in Beijing, has become very weak, and had previously been suspected of having prostate cancer but did not receive the further examination and surgery he sought.

Those medical details have not been independently verified by FreeChina.live. A separate account cited in current reporting also claims that Ren and his son may be under house arrest rather than in prison. Because the available accounts conflict on his precise custodial situation, authorities should immediately disclose his current location, health status and access to treatment.

Why this matters

Ren was sentenced in 2020 to 18 years in prison after publicly criticizing Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party’s handling of the COVID-19 outbreak. His case has long been viewed internationally as a prominent example of punishment for political speech.

If the new medical reports are accurate, the issue is no longer only one of imprisonment but of potentially life-threatening denial or delay of care. The death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo after late-stage cancer was discovered in custody remains a stark warning against allowing a prisoner’s medical condition to deteriorate without transparent, adequate treatment.

Free China Movement position

“The authorities should immediately disclose Ren Zhiqiang’s current location and medical condition, permit an independent medical examination, provide whatever specialist treatment is medically indicated, and allow medical parole or outside hospitalization if adequate care cannot be provided in custody. Political punishment must never become a death sentence through medical neglect.”

What remains unverified

  • The precise diagnosis and stage of any prostate disease or cancer.
  • Ren’s exact current place and form of detention.
  • The scope of medical treatment he has received.
  • Whether Chinese authorities have approved or denied outside hospitalization or medical parole.
