Wang Xiangchao (王相超) is a member of the Sai Er Te (塞尔特) Youth Fellowship, an unregistered house church in Shenyang, Liaoning province, held in pre-trial detention on suspicion of “organizing and using a cult organization to undermine implementation of the law.”
On June 28, 2025, police detained several members of the fellowship. Pastor Qu Hongbo (曲红波, also known as Pastor Mingdao 明道牧师), Shao Huaxuan (邵华煊), Wang Xiangchao, and Liu Xueyun (刘雪云) were subsequently formally charged and detained on suspicion of “organizing and using a cult organization to undermine the implementation of the law.” The fellowship’s members maintain that their gatherings were expressions of faith and community service, not violations of law.
In October 2025, authorities intensified the crackdown, detaining around eight members of the fellowship; some were later released on bail while others remained in detention. The August 31, 2026 monthly report of the Rights Defense Network (维权网) lists 王相超 among 15 people in Liaoning reported as detained without sentencing.
Ahead of a pretrial conference scheduled for April 7, 2026, the prosecution issued sentencing recommendations: Pastor Qu was recommended four and a half years plus a 50,000-yuan fine, while Wang Xiangchao, Shao Huaxuan, and Liu Xueyun were each recommended three-year terms and 30,000-yuan fines. Those recommendations were not verdicts; no outcome after the pretrial conference has been publicly documented. Family members and fellow church members issued a public appeal before the conference, asking that the court exclude illegally obtained evidence, permit defense witnesses, and give the defense adequate time.
