Wang Zhong (王忠) is a retired bank engineer from Kuancheng Manchu Autonomous County, Chengde, Hebei Province, sentenced to three and a half years in prison for practicing Falun Gong. A senior engineer at the People’s Bank of China in Kuancheng, he was 72 at the time of his latest sentencing and had been persecuted for his faith for over two decades.
In November 2004, Wang was arrested for distributing materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong. He was held at the Chengde brainwashing center for more than 20 days and, on November 10, 2004, was sent to the Gaoyang Labor Camp in Hebei to serve a three-year forced-labor term, where he was subjected to electric shocks on sensitive parts of his body, burned with cigarettes, beaten, and starved. His weight dropped from 170 pounds to 90 pounds, and he nearly lost his eyesight. In November 2005 he was transferred to the Handan Labor Camp, where guards poured hot water and hot tea into his eyes, further damaging his sight and hearing. He was released around August 2007.
In June 2010, he was deceived into attending a meeting at the People’s Bank and seized by agents of the 610 Office and the Domestic Security Division; he was held at the Jiecheng Villa in Chengde County for about a month and released after his family was extorted of 10,000 yuan. After another arrest on May 13, 2011, he was given one year of forced labor, but the labor camp refused to admit him because of his poor health; he was ordered to serve the time outside the camp, and the bank suspended his pay.
On May 4, 2023, Wang was reported for talking to two students about Falun Gong and arrested. Officers raided his home and confiscated his computer and printer. A month later, Captain Li Lin of the Kuancheng Domestic Security Office ordered the suspension of his pension. He was later sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the Kuancheng Manchu Autonomous County Court (the sentencing date is not reported). On February 3, 2024, he was transferred from the Kuancheng detention center to Tangshan Prison to serve the term.
Minghui reported him imprisoned at Tangshan Prison as of February 3, 2024. No later updates have been published; his present status has not been independently verified.
