Yang Zhiyuan (杨智渊) — Media Profile & Archive

This archive collects the documented reporting on the case of Yang Zhiyuan (杨智渊), the Taiwan activist detained in Wenzhou in August 2022 and sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment in August 2024. Entries are ordered chronologically. Reporting is preserved with its provenance; mainland official statements are identified as such.

Case chronology in the sources

  • August 3, 2022 — detention reported. Mainland state television (CCTV) reported that the Wenzhou state-security bureau had detained Yang Zhiyuan on suspicion of crimes endangering state security; Radio Free Asia and Taiwan media (Liberty Times, United Daily News, Central News Agency) reported the detention the same period. The mainland Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson stated that state-security organs had taken measures against a “Taiwan independence” suspect in accordance with the law.
  • August 10, 2022 — coercive measure changed. CCTV reported that Yang’s detention had been changed to residential surveillance at a designated location, with his family notified on August 5 — the second Taiwan national subjected to this measure after Lee Ming-che, according to Radio Free Asia.
  • September 16, 2022 — Taipei responds. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council held a press conference supporting Yang, stating he should be innocent and calling for his release and return to Taiwan (ETtoday).
  • April 25, 2023 — prosecution stage. The Wenzhou state-security bureau concluded its investigation and transferred the case to the Wenzhou procuratorate for review and prosecution; the arrest was approved (Supreme People’s Procuratorate portal; Liberty Times).
  • August 26, 2024 — sentencing. The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court convicted Yang of splitting the state (分裂国家罪) and sentenced him to nine years’ imprisonment with three years’ deprivation of political rights. Reported by Xinhua (September 6, 2024), the Central News Agency (September 5, 2024), and Taiwan’s Public Television Service. The mainland Taiwan Affairs Office reiterated its position that the punishment of “Taiwan independence” separatists was lawful and targeted only a small number of individuals.
  • August 31, 2026 — in-custody listing. The Rights Defense Network’s Issue 131 monthly report of mainland in-custody political prisoners and prisoners of conscience lists 杨智渊 in the “sentenced to 9 years, 48 people” group (41st of 48; English edition: “Yang Zhiyuan”). This is the most recent dated evidence of his continued imprisonment.

Source provenance and evidentiary notes

  • The biographical and case timeline above is compiled from the Wikipedia “楊智淵” entry, whose statements carry inline citations to CCTV, Xinhua, Radio Free Asia, the Central News Agency, the Liberty Times, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate portal, and ETtoday. Wikipedia is a tertiary source; the underlying cited outlets are the evidentiary basis.
  • Mainland official statements (Taiwan Affairs Office, state-security announcements via CCTV/Xinhua) are preserved as the official narrative of the case and are not presented as independently verified fact.
  • Attribution discipline: the charge of “splitting the state” is a judicial act of the mainland court; Yang’s friend’s statement that his views were not pro-independence is an attributed personal statement. Neither is presented as an established fact about his beliefs.
  • Evidentiary limitation: no post-sentencing reporting on Yang’s detention facility, health, or treatment in custody was found; the August 31, 2026 roster listing is the latest dated custody evidence.
  • Name-collision check: searches found no Falun Gong practitioner or other detainee named 杨智渊 with a nine-year sentence (no Minghui case record; no CHRD/tenchu database entry). All “Yang Zhiyuan” media coverage located refers to this same Taiwan activist.
