Background
Wang Hongyu (王红玉), born in May 1977, is a resident of Lushunkou District in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, and a Falun Gong practitioner. On June 28, 2016, Dalian authorities carried out coordinated arrests of Falun Gong practitioners across the city’s districts — an operation the police called the “1614” case. In Lushunkou District, fourteen practitioners were seized, including Wang Hongyu; nine were later formally arrested. According to the Minghui victim archive, she was tried together with eight co-defendants — Liu Renqiu, Jin Suyue, Sheng Jie, Yu Yongfu, Gu Shuchun, Wang Jinrong, Wang Huixuan, and Liu Daixue — and on December 22, 2017, the Lushun Court sentenced her to three and a half years in prison. Her term ran through December 27, 2019.
Re-arrest and sentencing
On April 3, 2025, Wang Hongyu was again detained — this time by officers of the Jiangxi Police Station in Lushunkou District, after she was reported for distributing Falun Gong materials; her home was searched. In mid-December 2025, a local court sentenced her to three years and two months in prison. The formal charge and the detention facility were not publicly reported. Her sentence runs through June 2, 2028.
Current status
The Rights Defense Network’s Issue 131 monthly in-custody report (August 31, 2026) lists Wang Hongyu among people serving three-year-and-two-month sentences who were in custody at that time. The report describes its list as incomplete and possibly containing errors.
