Wang Huayang (王华洋) — Political Prisoner Profile

Classification: Falun Gong practitioner from Zhaoyuan, Shandong; sentenced to seven years in prison in 2023 after a secret trial; reported in custody as of August 2026.

Background

Wang Huayang (王华洋) was born in 1964 in Zhaoyuan, Shandong Province. According to the China Human Rights Defenders prisoner database and a January 2024 report, he began practicing Falun Gong in 1999. His wife is Chi Ruimei (迟瑞美) and his daughter is Wang Longna (王龙娜).

Case chronology

  • March 23, 2012 — Zhaoyuan national-security police searched Wang’s home without producing warrants, according to the January 2024 report. His wife and daughter were taken to the town police station and detained. Wang fled his home rather than be taken, and lived displaced — separated from his family — for the next ten years.
  • July 27, 2022 — Acting on a tip, a joint team of Zhaoyuan and Qixia police seized Wang at a fish farm in the mountains outside Xiapo village, Shewopo town, Qixia. From July 27 to August 18 he was held under residential surveillance at a designated location in Laishan; on August 19 he was criminally detained and taken to the Qixia detention center; on September 23 his arrest was approved and he was moved to the Zhaoyuan detention center; on November 23 the domestic-security police transferred his case to the Zhaoyuan procuratorate.
  • July 21, 2023 — Wang was tried inside the Zhaoyuan detention center. Prosecutors charged him with “using a cult organization to undermine implementation of the law” (利用邪教组织破坏法律实施罪), a charge his defense lawyer contested, arguing the evidence was insufficient and his beliefs were lawful. The court nevertheless sentenced Wang to seven years’ imprisonment, without notifying his family, according to the report. The formal charge named in the report is recorded here as reported by the source, not as an independently verified legal finding.
  • December 21, 2023 — Wang was transferred to Jinan Prison (济南监狱) in Shandong to serve his sentence. The prison told his family by phone that he was “uncooperative” and that visiting decisions would be made a month later, according to the report.
  • August 31, 2026 — The Rights Defense Network’s monthly in-custody report lists Wang Huayang among mainland China’s currently detained prisoners, in the cohort serving seven-year sentences. His prison term is recorded as running through August 18, 2029.
