Wang Juxiang (王菊香) — Political Prisoner Profile

Classification: Former middle-school teacher and Falun Gong practitioner from Fujian; sentenced to three years and four months in prison in 2023; reported in custody as of August 2026.

Background

Wang Juxiang (王菊香) was born in 1973 in Wuping County, Fujian, and later lived in Jimei District, Xiamen. She worked as a middle-school teacher and, according to reporting, was well regarded by her students. She began practicing Falun Gong in November 1998. This is her second documented prison sentence connected to her beliefs.

Case chronology

  • Late 2000 — After the 1999 crackdown on Falun Gong began, Wang traveled to Beijing carrying her then three-month-old son to appeal on behalf of the practice. She was arrested and taken back to Fujian, where police placed her under her school’s surveillance, according to reporting.
  • July 2001 — Wang was detained for writing pro–Falun Gong slogans in public in Wuping County and for discussing Falun Gong with her students. She was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, according to the report — her first documented sentence.
  • June 19, 2022 — Around 9 a.m., officers from the Xiamen City and Jimei District national-security police and the Feng’an police station entered Wang’s home, searched it, and seized a laptop, mobile phones, and Falun Gong books. She was taken to the Jimei District police station; because her son, then a middle-school student, had no one to care for him, she was released into residential surveillance the next evening.
  • November 4, 2023 — Wang was criminally detained and taken to a detention center. Later that year she was sentenced to three years and four months plus a fine — the charge was not publicly identified. Her sentence term is recorded as running through February 3, 2027.
  • July 18, 2024 — Wang was transferred to the Fujian Provincial Women’s Prison.
  • August 31, 2026 — The Rights Defense Network’s monthly in-custody report lists Wang Juxiang among mainland China’s currently detained prisoners, in the cohort serving three years and four months.
