This archive collects the publicly documented reporting on the case of Wang Wei (王威), born October 24, 1967, serving an eight-year sentence for subversion of state power as vice-chairman of the secretly organized China Democracy Victory Party (中国民主胜利党). Detained May 17, 2022; convicted by the Luzhou Intermediate People’s Court; appeal upheld by the Sichuan High People’s Court in December 2024; projected release about March 2030; held at the Luzhou City Detention Center. This is the male Wang Wei — a different person from the female Wang Wei (王威, female) pair published separately.
Source chronology
- 2022 — arrest. On May 17, 2022, Wang Wei was detained by Luzhou police and placed under residential surveillance at a designated location, the first of the China Democracy Victory Party group to be taken. On September 8, 2022, he was criminally detained on suspicion of subversion of state power; on September 30, he was formally arrested. (CHRD Prisoners of Conscience database record.)
- 2024 — conviction and appeal. The Luzhou Intermediate People’s Court convicted Wang Wei of subversion of state power and sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment, three years’ deprivation of political rights, and confiscation of 100,000 yuan in personal property. Dui Hua, reporting from a copy of the judgment posted online by an overseas group, dates the first-instance verdict to April 24, 2024; the CHRD database records June 19, 2024. On December 2, 2024, the Sichuan High People’s Court rejected the appeals of all six defendants and upheld the verdicts. (Dui Hua Foundation, “Prisoner Updates 2025 #2”; CHRD record.)
- 2025 — international documentation. The U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China cited the Rights Defense Network’s February 1, 2025 briefing on the six-person case, naming Tang Gaofeng (12 years), Wang Wei (8 years), Wang Yifei (7 years and 6 months), Zhou Dan (6 years), Liu Zhengang (5 years and 6 months), and Dai Lu (3 years). (CECC annual report.)
- 2026 — current custody. The Rights Defense Network’s Issue 131 monthly roster (August 31, 2026) lists Wang Wei among currently held prisoners, in the 8-years band.
Case context
Wang Wei was a core member of the China Democracy Victory Party: he met founder Tang Gaofeng online in 2009, attended the party’s first central committee meeting in Chengdu in October 2011, served as vice-chairman, and helped publicize the party on overseas social media from 2011 to 2016. Five co-defendants — Tang Gaofeng (12 years), Wang Yifei (7 years and 6 months), Zhou Dan (6 years), Liu Zhengang (5 years and 6 months), and Dai Lu (3 years) — were convicted alongside him.
Evidentiary limitations
- The conviction and sentence rest on the Luzhou court’s judgment as reported by monitors; the judgment itself is not publicly published by any PRC court or state media located in this research pass.
- First-instance verdict date differs between Dui Hua (April 24, 2024) and the CHRD record (June 19, 2024); both agree the appeal was upheld in December 2024.
- No source names a prison (as distinct from the pre-sentence detention center); none is stated here.
- Custody status rests on the August 31, 2026 roster snapshot; it is dated and attributed, not a timeless claim.
- Same-name records for other 王威 individuals (the female Wang Wei pair published separately; CHRD female Falun Gong record; CHRD Henan record) are distinct persons and are not part of this record.
