Wang Ying (王鹰) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Baotou City in Inner Mongolia, sentenced to four years and two months in prison in December 2023. This is his second prison term for practicing Falun Gong.
In March 2018, Wang was arrested with fellow practitioner Wang Hongling after distributing Falun Gong informational materials. The Qingshan District Court in Baotou tried both on December 26, 2018 and sentenced Wang on January 24, 2019 to two years in prison and a 5,000 yuan fine. Their lawyers appealed to the Baotou Intermediate Court, which upheld the sentences. Wang served the full term, released in March 2020.
On March 29, 2023, Wang visited fellow practitioner Zhang Ruitong’s home in Baotou’s Donghe District with Meng Lili. Police from the Tiexi Police Station, acting on a tip from a neighborhood committee that had been monitoring Zhang, arrested all three on the spot. Officers interrogated them through the night and searched Wang’s home twice, confiscating Falun Gong books, a laptop, a printer, and informational materials — items later used as the evidence for prosecution.
Wang and Zhang were held at the Donghe District Detention Center; Meng was held at the Guchengwan Detention Center. The Donghe District Procuratorate indicted the three on September 28, 2023. The Donghe District Court held four hearings — on November 17, 27, 28, and December 14, 2023. Defense lawyers entered not-guilty pleas for all three; the prosecutor recommended heavy sentences.
On December 21, 2023, the court sentenced Wang Ying and Zhang Ruitong each to four years and two months in prison and a 20,000 yuan fine, and Meng Lili to three years and three months and a 10,000 yuan fine. The families were preparing appeals, according to reporting at the time; no verified information about the appeals’ outcome or Wang’s current place of detention has been published since.
Attribution note: the details above are drawn from reporting by Minghui.org, a Falun Gong-affiliated news outlet, and from the Chinese Human Rights Defenders Prisoners of Conscience database record for Wang Ying. No independent corroboration from official court records, state media, or other outlets was located for this case. One detail is inconsistent across sources: Minghui’s Chinese-language reporting describes Wang as originally from Hebei (河北籍), while the CHRD record describes him as a Baotou native; both agree he was a Baotou resident at arrest.
Name note
This profile covers 王鹰 (yīng, “eagle”) of Baotou, Inner Mongolia — not 王英 (“hero”), a different name borne by other individuals including a Maoming, Guangdong case. Do not merge these records.
