Wang Yuping (王喻平)
Wang Yuping (王喻平), who also writes under the pen names Wang Yiming (王一鸣) and “People’s Thinker” (人民思想家), is a Hubei-based democracy activist and online writer serving a two-year-and-ten-month prison sentence imposed by the Jianli City Court on December 30, 2025. He is the founder and chairman of the China Democratic Justice Party (中华民主正义党).
Background
Wang Yuping was born on September 11, 1964, in Rongcheng Town, Jianli County (now Jianli City), Jingzhou, Hubei Province. He received secondary technical education and worked as a branch-factory manager at a state-owned enterprise and later as a senior executive at a private company. He is an honorary member of the Independent Chinese PEN Center.
Democracy advocacy and earlier detention
Beginning in 2008, Wang published pro-democracy writings online calling for an end to one-party rule, and faced repeated detention, surveillance, fines, beatings, and expulsion from workplaces. In October 2011 he fled to Bangkok, Thailand; on November 8, 2012, he was seized there and brought back to China.
On January 8, 2015, the Jingzhou Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to 11 years’ imprisonment for inciting subversion of state power, with three years’ deprivation of political rights; the Hubei High People’s Court upheld the sentence on May 19, 2015. He served in Jiangbei Prison and, from March 4, 2016, Hongshan Prison. He was released in November 2023.
On May 27, 2024, Wang was forcibly placed in a psychiatric facility by local authorities; he was discharged after resisting.
The current case
In September 2025, Wang was detained on suspicion of “intentional injury” after a dispute with stability-maintenance personnel, according to rights-defense reporting. His family’s lawyer met him and reported that Wang said he had only brushed a police officer he suspected of following him with a thin wire; the officer fell and fractured his lower back. The lawyer reported that Wang had been beaten four times after being sent to the detention center, injuring his ribs, and filed a complaint.
His case was tried by the Jianli City Court on December 20, 2025; Wang refused to appear. On December 30, 2025, the court sentenced him to two years and ten months for intentional injury, with the term running to July 4, 2028. He was transferred to the Guanghua Prison in Qianjiang, Hubei.
